Fly control is one of the most common requests we receive during the Auckland summer months—and for good reason. Every fly problem is different, which is why our treatments are always tailored to your specific situation.

At Pestrex, we use carefully selected products and state-of-the-art application methods to deliver safe, effective, and long-lasting fly control—no matter the environment.

What Can You Do to Reduce Flies?

Before or alongside treatment, there are several steps you can take to reduce fly activity and improve treatment effectiveness:

  • Pick up pet droppings immediately—these attract flies within minutes.

  • Bag and seal all rubbish, and ensure bins have tight-fitting lids. Keep the exterior of bins clean.

  • Keep compost bins and grass clippings well away from your home.

  • Wash pet bedding regularly.

  • Clean up food scraps and spills as soon as possible.

Eliminating these fly-attracting factors will significantly reduce the number of flies around your property.

Why Isn’t My Automatic Fly Spray Working?

Automatic dispensers can help in cooler temperatures, but during summer, flies become more active and their metabolism increases—making them less affected by the low-dose pyrethrum used in these sprays.

Our professional-grade treatments are designed to remain effective even in high temperatures, using advanced formulas that target flies at multiple stages of their lifecycle, overcoming resistance and delivering better results.

Will Your Fly Spray Stain My Walls Like Last Time?

No! Our modern application methods use low-water volumes and non-staining, odourless products. We ensure a clean, precise application with no visible drips or marks on surfaces.

At most, you might notice a slight residue on the edges of window glass, which can be easily wiped off.

Should I Clean Fly Spots from Walls and Ceilings Before or After Treatment?

Always clean before the treatment.
Wiping down surfaces after treatment can remove the protective product layer, reducing its effectiveness. If your walls and ceilings need cleaning, please do so prior to your appointment.

At Pestrex, our trained exterminators assess each property individually to understand why flies are present and tailor the treatment to eliminate the source of the problem—not just the symptoms.

We also provide recommendations for simple, practical steps you can take to reduce fly numbers, which help enhance the effectiveness of our treatments.

Internal Fly Treatment

Our internal fly control focuses on the areas where flies are most active, particularly:

  • Kitchens

  • Dining areas

  • Living rooms

We ensure thorough coverage of the surfaces where flies like to land, such as ceilings, light fittings, and window frames. In other areas of the house, we target entry points—including doors and access to patios and decks—to stop flies from making their way indoors when those areas are opened.

External Fly Treatment

For external spraying, our focus shifts to fly behavior and attractants:

  • We treat entry points and exterior walls adjacent to kitchens, dining, and living areas.

  • We give special attention to sunny sides of the home, where flies tend to rest in the mornings—particularly walls and eaves.

  • We also treat problem areas such as:

    • Bin stations

    • Compost heaps

    • Pet waste zones

This comprehensive approach helps prevent flies from entering your home in the first place.

How the Treatment Works

Our fly control treatments don’t eliminate every single fly instantly—instead, they reduce the population significantly. So instead of 20 flies constantly buzzing around, you may only notice the occasional one that enters before being affected by the treatment.

Internal Treatments – Preparation Checklist

To ensure a safe and effective treatment, please complete the following before your scheduled appointment:

  • Cover or store any exposed food, including fruit bowls and open containers.

  • Put away clean dishes, tea towels, and paper towels.
(It’s fine to leave used dishes out if they’re going to be washed.)

  • Store personal items such as toothbrushes, towels, and toilet paper.

  • Unhook any picture frames and fragile wall hangings and place them on the floor against wall
  • Cover fish tanks and switch off the pump.

  • Cover or store pet food and water bowls.

  • Pull the duvet up to cover pillows and ensure cots or bassinets are covered.

You will need to vacate your home for a minimum of 4 hours after the treatment is completed.

Aftercare Instructions

Upon returning home:

  • Open windows and doors to allow your home to air out for 15 minutes.

  • Wipe down all food preparation surfaces before use.
We recommend wearing rubber gloves during this process and avoiding eye contact until gloves are removed.

  • You may notice slight residue along the edges of windows.

    • It is safe to wipe off the glass,

    • But avoid wiping wood or metal frames, as this may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment in those areas.

If you have any questions or need assistance before or after your treatment, the Pestrex team is always here to help.

If there are specific areas of your home you’d prefer not to have treated—such as bedrooms or low-use spaces—please let our technician know before the treatment begins.

Many customers choose to treat only main living areas like the kitchen, dining, and lounge. Our technicians are happy to answer any questions you may have and will advise you if a particular area should be included for the treatment to be effective.

Safe and Professional Application

Our internal treatments use synthetic pyrethroids, which are derived from natural pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. These products have been safely used in sensitive environments for decades.

  • All treatments are professionally applied at levels that are extremely safe for humans and pets.

  • The active ingredients are readily metabolised, so if contact does occur, they pass through the body without accumulating or causing harm.

Your safety and comfort are our top priorities—if you have any concerns, feel free to speak with your technician before or after your treatment.
