Fleas commonly breed in carpet fibres, soft furnishings, and cracks or crevices where dust and moisture collect. Key breeding hotspots include pet bedding and outdoor areas where pets rest. Even if you don’t have pets, stray cats wandering around or living under the house can introduce fleas into your environment.
Most of our customers dealing with bites never actually see fleas. Many initially assume they have bed bugs, but in 99% of cases, the culprit is fleas.
It’s likely fleas if:
Multiple people in your household are being bitten
Bites appear around the feet, lower legs, or waist
Even with regular flea treatment, pets can still pick up fleas. When the pet is present, fleas usually go unnoticed because they prefer to feed on the animal.
However, if the pet is removed from the home, or rests in a room it doesn’t usually access, mature fleas will seek out a new food source—which is often you or your family.
Important tip:
Avoid kicking your pet outside if you spot fleas. This can worsen the problem. Instead, treat the pet immediately and allow it access to its usual areas, so fleas continue to feed on their preferred host and are more easily controlled.
Fleas can be introduced into your home in a variety of ways:
Stray animals lingering around your property
Visitors with pets
Exposure to at-risk environments like schools, hospitals, or childcare centres
Flea bombs only target adult fleas and larvae, which make up about 40% of the flea population. The remaining 60% (eggs and pupae) are not affected by the fumes. Once the smoke clears, the treatment stops working, allowing the life cycle to continue.
This is a classic flea life cycle scenario. While you were away, the fleas’ preferred host (your pet) may have been absent, so the developing fleas went without food. The moment you walk in, they sense your body heat and vibrations, hatch instantly, and leap onto you to feed. These tiny fleas are newly hatched from pupae, and very hungry.
Our experienced team at Pestrex can help determine whether fleas are the issue and recommend the most effective treatment to solve the problem.
At Pestrex, our flea treatments are designed to target breeding zones and eliminate all stages of the flea life cycle—from eggs to adults.
We apply a specialised spray treatment to key areas throughout your home, including:
Carpets and rugs
Skirting boards and tongue-and-groove flooring
Known or suspected pet resting areas, both indoors and outdoors
Sub-floor spaces and other hidden breeding sites
Our treatment includes two essential components:
A fast-acting agent to eliminate adult fleas
A growth regulator that interrupts the flea life cycle by killing eggs and larvae as they hatch
You can expect significant control within 48 hours, although it’s normal to notice the occasional flea for up to 2 weeks as late-stage pupae emerge. These fleas will quickly die after coming into contact with treated surfaces.
Whether it’s your home or business, the Pestrex team is ready to help.
To ensure the best results from your flea treatment, please follow these steps:
IMPORTANT: Remove small items from the floor and from under beds.
Do not place them on the bed, as these areas may need to be treated.
The more exposed floor space, the better the coverage and effectiveness of the treatment.
If you’re experiencing bites in bed, strip the bed and hot wash the sheets.
Optional but recommended:
Vacuum all carpets thoroughly to raise the pile and improve treatment penetration.
After vacuuming, seal and discard the vacuum bag contents (or empty the canister into a sealed bag).
Cover fish tanks and turn off pumps.
Store or cover pet food and water bowls.
You’ll need to vacate the home for at least 4 hours after the treatment is completed.
When you return, open windows and doors to allow the home to air out for 10 minutes.
If you have thick-pile carpets, we recommend wearing slippers for 24 hours, as there may be slight dampness deeper in the fibres.
Our internal treatments use synthetic pyrethroids, derived from natural pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. These products have been proven safe in sensitive environments over several decades.
All treatments are professionally applied at concentrations that are extremely safe for both humans and pets. The products are readily metabolized, so if contact does occur, they simply pass through the body without accumulating or causing harm over time.
At Pestrex, your safety is our priority—and every product we use meets strict safety standards for peace of mind.
