We’re often called out for house spraying for spiders for two main reasons:

  1. Unsightly webbing on the exterior of homes, especially on darker weatherboard or cedar-clad houses.

  2. Concerns about white-tailed spiders, especially in areas like Waitakere, which is known for regular infestations.

The good news? Spider control is simple and highly effective—especially when done right.

Should I Combine Spider and Fly Treatments?

Absolutely. Spider treatments share a lot in common with our fly control treatments, so it’s ideal to combine them—especially during the summer months.

Controlling flying insects also helps reduce the food source for many web-building spiders, which in turn helps control white-tailed spiders, who feed on them.

Common Questions About Spider Bites & Behaviour

“I’ve seen graphic images of white-tail spider bites—are they really that dangerous?”

Images showing necrotic (flesh-eating) reactions are often attributed to white-tailed spider bites. While there’s still debate among researchers, anecdotal evidence suggests white-tails may be a cause in some cases.

  • Their venom isn’t considered especially potent.

  • Reactions may result from bacteria introduced through the bite or individual sensitivity to proteins in their venom and saliva.

  • Severe reactions are rare but possible, especially in sensitive individuals.

“Why are white-tailed spiders coming inside?”

White-tailed spiders typically live outdoors, where they hunt other spiders—especially web builders.

They usually come indoors when their environment is disturbed, such as after:

  • Gardening

  • Construction or renovation work

  • Heavy cleaning or pest treatment outdoors

This temporary displacement often leads to sightings inside the home.

“Are Daddy Long Legs the most poisonous spiders in NZ?”

No, that’s a myth.
Also known as cellar spiders, Daddy Long Legs do have venom, but it’s mild and generally harmless to humans.

  • They can bite, but the bite typically causes only a brief burning sensation, if anything at all.

  • Their fangs are small, but not incapable of piercing skin.

Need Spider Control Advice or Service?

If you’re dealing with spider issues—especially webbing or white-tail sightings—Pestrex is here to help. Contact our team for advice or to book a treatment that’s safe, effective, and tailored to your home.

At Pestrex, our spider treatments are tailored depending on whether we’re targeting web-building spiders or white-tailed spiders. Each species requires a slightly different approach to ensure long-term, effective results.

Webbing Spiders

For web-building spiders, our treatment focuses on the areas they use to spin their webs and catch prey.

External Treatment Includes:

  • Undersides of gutters and eaves

  • Around doors, windows, vents, and other entry points

  • Visible spider webs and external wall surfaces

  • Outdoor furniture, rubbish bins, and fencing around outdoor living areas

To extend the effectiveness of the treatment, we add a surfactant that offers weatherproofing and UV protection, helping the product withstand outdoor conditions for longer-lasting results.

Internal Treatment Includes:

  • Targeted application to areas where spiders tend to gather, such as:

    • Ceiling and wall junctions

    • Corners

    • Any additional areas of concern you highlight

White-Tailed Spiders

White-tailed spiders require a broader treatment strategy, as they are hunters and more mobile than web-building spiders.

Our treatment includes everything in the webbing spider service, plus additional attention to:

  • Roof spaces

  • Sub-floor areas

  • Likely entry points and potential indoor habitats, including:

    • Wardrobes

    • Linen cupboards

    • Other dark, undisturbed spaces

This comprehensive approach ensures we address both active spiders and the environments they prefer.

Need Help with Spider Control?

Whether it’s webbing spiders making a mess outside or white-tailed spiders creeping inside, Pestrex has a solution.

External Treatments Only

Preparation:
No preparation is required.

Aftercare:

  • Leave existing spider webs in place for at least 5 days.
This allows the treatment to fully affect the spiders using those webs.

  • When removing webs, do not wash them off—this may remove the treatment.
Instead, use a dry brush or broom to sweep them away.

Internal Treatments

Preparation Checklist:
Before your treatment, please:

  • Cover or store any exposed food (e.g., fruit bowls, leftovers)

  • Put away clean dishes, tea towels, and paper towels
(Used dishes can remain out if they will be washed soon)

  • Store personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, towels, and toilet paper

  • Cover fish tanks and switch off the pump

  • Cover or store pet food and water bowls

  • Pull the duvet over pillows and cover cots or bassinets

You’ll need to vacate the home for at least 4 hours after the treatment is completed.

Aftercare:

  • On returning, open doors and windows to air out the house for at least 10 minutes

  • Wipe down all food preparation surfaces
We recommend wearing rubber gloves and avoiding touching your eyes until gloves are removed

If you have any questions or need help preparing for your treatment, the Pestrex team is always happy to assist.

Our treatments use synthetic pyrethroids, which are modelled on natural pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. These products have been proven safe over decades of use, even in sensitive environments.

All treatments are professionally applied at levels that are extremely safe for both humans and pets. The products are readily metabolised, meaning that if contact occurs, they will pass through the body without accumulating or causing long-term effects.

At Pestrex, your safety is our top priority. We only use trusted, scientifically supported products to deliver effective pest control with complete peace of mind.
