Identifying and Controlling Cockroaches in Your Home

Customers typically encounter two main types of cockroaches:

German Cockroaches (Indoor Cockroaches)

These are the most troublesome and are usually found in kitchens. They love warm, moist areas and commonly hide:

  • Behind fridges

  • Inside the base of cordless kettles

  • In microwaves and dishwashers

If you turn on the kitchen light at night, you may spot them quickly scurrying away. German cockroaches breed rapidly and require professional treatment to eliminate effectively. Juvenile German Cockroaches reach maturity in just 60 days – adult females are capable of producing an egg case per month containing approximately 40 nymph’s. It is important to call in professional Cockroach control early to prevent German Cockroach contamination of food surfaces – they are carriers of Salmonella, E.Coli and Dysentery and have been linked to outbreaks of gastroenteritis.

Wood Cockroaches (Outdoor Cockroaches)

There are many species of wood cockroach, and they vary in appearance. What they have in common is a strong preference for living outdoors. However, you may occasionally spot one inside, especially after:

  • Gardening or house washing

  • Deliveries of firewood

  • Periods of heavy rain

They often nest in letterboxes, and it’s common to accidentally bring them inside with the mail.

How Can I Tell Which Type I Have?

For the untrained eye, visual identification can be tricky. It’s often easier to determine the type based on where you find them:

  • Found in the kitchen (behind the fridge, in appliances, etc.): Most likely German cockroaches.

  • Found in random spots (bedroom curtains, lounge walls, etc.): Likely wood cockroaches.
Note: You’ll rarely find German cockroaches in these areas unless it’s a severe infestation.

Do DIY Cockroach Treatments Work?

Grabbing a can of bug spray might seem like a quick fix, but it often makes the problem worse:

  • Most store-bought sprays and foggers repel cockroaches, causing them to hide deeper inside walls and spread to other parts of the home.

  • These treatments don’t address the root of the infestation and won’t provide lasting control.

Effective cockroach elimination requires targeted treatment based on the species, their habits, and where they’re nesting.

Let the Experts Help

At Pestrex, our trained technicians accurately identify the type of cockroach you’re dealing with and apply the most effective treatment to eliminate the infestation and prevent it from returning.

Our Approach to Cockroach Control

The right treatment method depends on the type of cockroach you’re dealing with. At Pestrex, we tailor our approach to ensure effective and long-lasting results.

German Cockroach Control (Indoor)

For indoor infestations, we use a spot-treatment spray with bait specifically designed for German cockroaches.

  • The bait is non-toxic but highly attractive to cockroaches, drawing them to treated areas.

  • As they feed, they pick up thousands of micro-encapsulated treatment particles, which are carried back to their nesting sites.

  • The treatment is then spread throughout the colony, killing cockroaches once it enters their system.

You’ll usually see results within a few days, though newly hatched nymphs may appear briefly. These will also die upon contact with the treated surfaces.

In rare cases of severe infestation, we may recommend a follow-up treatment after two weeks for complete eradication.

Wood Cockroach Control (Outdoor)

Wood cockroaches generally live outside and only enter your home by accident. Our strategy focuses on keeping them out.

  • We apply a highly repellent barrier treatment around the base of your home, windows, doors, and other known entry points such as:

    • Utility pipes and wires

    • Balcony supports

    • Trees or vegetation in contact with the structure

This barrier deters cockroaches from entering. If they attempt to cross it, they are exposed to the treatment and will die shortly after.

Internal Treatments

German, American, Gisborne & Outdoor  Cockroaches:

Kitchen Area:

  • Reduce clutter on bench tops I.e dirty dishes

  • Empty cupboards and drawers if Cockroaches have been sighted within the cabinetry.

  • Store food, utensils, cookware, and pet food in sealed containers if possible (our technicians can safely work around these if needed)

  • Clean all grease, crumbs, spills, and food residue thoroughly.

  • Pull the fridge, dishwasher and stove away from the wall to allow the technician access behind the appliances – required for German Cockroach treatment, or if other species have been seen frequently on these appliances.

  • Vacuum and mop floors before treatment.

Bathroom & Laundry Areas:

  • Put away toothbrushes, towels, and personal care items.

  • Close lid of toilet

Pets & Family Safety:

  • Remove pets from the property during treatment.

  • Ensure all pet toys and bowls are put away.
  • Cover fish tanks and switch off air pumps temporarily.

  • Children and occupants should stay out during treatment and until surfaces are dry or the technician advises re-entry. Most treatments require approximately 3–4 hours before re-entry.

A technician may advise leaving certain areas undisturbed  during a German Cockroach treatment. This is commonly recommended for severe infestations to avoid disturbing the Cockroaches and driving them deeper into the wall voids, hidden harbourage areas, or other parts of the home. Limiting disruption helps to ensure the treatment remains as effective as possible and allows targeted products such as baits and residual insecticides to work properly.

Aftercare

  • Open windows and doors to allow your home to air out for 15 minutes.

  • Wipe down all food preparation surfaces before use.
  • Do not mop or wet wipe treated areas as this will remove the residual insecticide. I.e. window sills, cabinetry, floorboards or vinyl

  • Continue good hygiene practices to prevent re-infestation of German Cockroaches.

  • Follow up treatments may be required for severe infestations.

  • If you have thick-pile carpets, we recommend wearing slippers for 24 hours, as there may be a slight dampness deeper in the fibres.

External Treatments

  • Please close all doors and windows while the treatment is being applied.
This ensures the product remains concentrated in the target areas and prevents it from drifting indoors during application.

  • Ensure that any house wash services occur ahead of your exterior treatment to avoid washing off the residual barrier applied.
  • Ensure all pet toys and bowls are put away.

Our unique internal treatment is so safe and low-impact that it can even be applied in commercial kitchens while food is being prepared—with no disruption to operations.

For external treatments, we use synthetic pyrethroids, derived from natural pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. These products have been safely used in sensitive environments for decades.

  • All treatments are professionally applied at levels that are extremely safe for both humans and pets.

  • The products are readily metabolized, meaning that even if contact occurs, they will pass through the body without accumulating or causing long-term harm.

At Pestrex, your safety and peace of mind come first. Every product we use is selected for its proven effectiveness and safety profile.
