If you’re dealing with ants, chances are you’ve got white-footed house ants—the most common ant species found in the Auckland region. These small black ants are the top reason homeowners and businesses call Pestrex for professional ant extermination.

White-footed house ants typically nest in cavities and are often found in walls and ceilings, especially on the sunny side of the property.

Most of the time, they’ll stay outside, foraging for food and water. But when their nest is disturbed or food becomes scarce, you’ll start noticing long, persistent trails of ants heading straight for any available food inside your home.

Pro tip: Avoid using store-bought ant bait indoors. If you’re dealing with white-footed house ants, it can actually make the infestation worse. If you’re unsure of the species, place the bait outside—it can still be effective without attracting more ants into your home.

What if it’s not white-footed house ants?

Other, less common species in Auckland include the common black house ant, coastal brown ants (especially in areas like St Heliers and Sandringham/Mt Albert), and Argentine ants (becoming an increasing issue in Onehunga).

Correct identification is critical—different species require different treatment methods. Using the wrong approach can make the infestation harder to manage.

At Pestrex, our experienced technicians are trained to identify the exact species of ant in your home and apply the most effective treatment.

When treating the most common ant species in Auckland, our primary goal is to eliminate the queen ants in every nest located in and around your property.

We achieve this using a non-repellent treatment applied to the exterior of your home, targeting nesting sites, ant highways, and active trails. The ants unknowingly pick up microscopic particles of the treatment and carry it back to the colony, spreading it throughout the nest—eventually leading to its complete collapse.

In most cases, you’ll see results within a week, though larger nests may take up to 5 weeks to be fully eradicated.

For those needing immediate relief from ants inside the home, we can also apply a repellent treatment in targeted problem areas. This creates a barrier to keep ants out while the exterior treatment continues to work on the source of the infestation.

Concerned about indoor chemical use? No problem—many customers opt for an external-only treatment, which is often sufficient and effective.

Internal Treatment – Preparation Checklist:
Before your scheduled internal treatment, please ensure the following:

  • Cover or store any exposed food (e.g., fruit bowls).

  • Put away clean dishes, tea towels, and paper towels. (It’s fine to leave dirty dishes out if they’re about to be washed.)

  • Store toothbrushes, bathroom towels, and toilet paper.

  • Cover fish tanks and turn off the pump.

  • Store or cover pet food and water bowls.

  • Pull the duvet up to cover all pillows and ensure cots are covered.

  • You must vacate your home for a minimum of 4 hours after the treatment is completed.

Aftercare for Internal Treatments:

  • Upon returning home, open windows and doors and allow your home to air out for at least 10 minutes.

  • Wipe down all food preparation surfaces.
We recommend using rubber gloves and avoiding contact with your eyes until gloves are removed.

If you have any questions or need clarification, our team is always happy to assist.

Our internal ant treatments use synthetic pyrethroids, which are modeled on natural pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. These products have a long-standing track record of safety, even in sensitive environments.

All treatments are professionally applied and used at levels that are safe for both humans and pets. The products are readily metabolized, meaning that if contact does occur, they will pass through the body without accumulating or causing long-term effects.

Your safety is our top priority, and we only use treatments that meet stringent safety standards backed by decades of research.
