Understanding Bed Bugs in Auckland

Bed bugs are an emerging and increasingly common issue in Auckland, particularly in inner-city apartments and short-term accommodations such as hotels, backpackers, and Airbnb properties.

At Pestrex, we have extensive experience in eliminating bed bugs. However, we’ve found that bed bug control is widely misunderstood—even among some professionals. Misinformation is common, which is why we focus on education as well as effective treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bed Bugs

What are the signs of bed bugs?

Many people check only their mattress when they suspect bed bugs, but unless it’s a severe infestation, you’re unlikely to find signs there.

Here’s where to look instead:

  • Box base beds: Flip the base and inspect around the edges where the bottom cover is stapled. Look for blood spots, shed skins, tiny white eggs, and live bugs near the staples and under the fabric.

  • Wooden slat beds: Remove the mattress and check the ends of the slats where they meet the frame.

  • Headboards: Examine behind the headboard or where it connects to the bed frame.

These are the most common hiding places bed bugs prefer.

I’m getting bitten at night but can’t see anything—do I have bed bugs?

Probably not. In about 95% of the cases where people suspect bed bug bites, the issue turns out to be something else. Unless you’re part of an at-risk group, it’s unlikely to be bed bugs.

Who’s at risk for bed bugs?

You may be at risk if:

  • You live in an inner-city apartment

  • You’ve stayed overnight at a hotel, motel, backpackers, or B&B within the last 3 months

  • A guest has stayed with you recently after staying in temporary accommodation

  • You’ve purchased second-hand bedroom furniture

How easy is it to get bed bugs?

Bed bugs are not easily picked up. Even if you visit a location with an infestation, you’re unlikely to bring them home unless you’ve stayed overnight in an infested room.

If it’s not bed bugs, what could it be?

Most often, it’s fleas—even if you haven’t seen any. If our inspection shows no signs of bed bugs, we typically recommend a flea treatment, which usually resolves the issue.

Another common culprit: mosquitoes—especially if windows are left open at night.

Our experienced technicians will ask the right questions and perform a thorough inspection to identify the real cause of the bites and provide the correct solution.

But my doctor said the bites look like bed bugs…

Unfortunately, even medical professionals can’t confirm the source based on appearance alone. Everyone reacts differently to insect bites, and many different pests can cause similar symptoms. Accurate diagnosis requires a professional pest inspection, not just visual identification of the bite.

I saw blood spots in a line on my sheets—does that mean bed bugs?

While blood spots in a line are often mentioned online as a sign of bed bugs, this isn’t a reliable indicator. Any insect bite can cause blood spotting—especially in small clusters or lines.

At Pestrex, we rely on thorough inspections, not assumptions, to determine the right treatment. If you’re unsure what’s causing bites or suspect bed bugs, give our expert team a call—we’re here to help.

How Pestrex Effectively Eliminates Bed Bugs

The most important first step in getting rid of bed bugs is a comprehensive inspection. Bed bugs are masters at hiding—even in the smallest cracks and crevices. At Pestrex, we understand their behavior and know exactly where to look, from common nesting spots to the more unexpected places they like to settle.

We dedicate time to thoroughly identify all infestation zones and develop a targeted treatment strategy—not just to eliminate the infestation quickly, but also to prevent it from spreading to other areas.

In apartment blocks, DIY treatments and poor strategies by inexperienced pest controllers are the leading cause of bed bugs spreading to neighboring units. That’s why professional expertise is crucial.

Our process includes:

  1. Thorough vacuuming of high-concentration areas — this helps reduce the infestation rapidly and sets the stage for effective control.

  2. Precise residual spray treatment — applied only to key nesting sites and surrounding areas to kill any remaining bed bugs and provide long-lasting protection against re-infestation.

If you have questions or need professional advice on how to get rid of bed bugs, don’t hesitate to contact the Pestrex team. We’re here to help.

Preparation for Bed Bug Treatment

  • Strip all bedding from the infested room. Place the linen into a sealed plastic rubbish bag and remove it from the room.

  • Hot wash and dry the linen before returning it to the bed.

  • No further preparation is needed. It’s important to leave all other items in place and avoid disturbing the room—this helps prevent the bed bugs from spreading to other areas.

You can remain at home, but you’ll need to vacate the treated room for at least 4 hours after the treatment is completed.

Aftercare Instructions

  • Once you return, open windows and doors in the treated room and allow it to air out for 10 minutes before use.

Our internal treatments use synthetic pyrethroids, which are derived from natural pyrethrins found in chrysanthemum flowers. These products have been proven safe over decades of use, even in sensitive environments.

All treatments are professionally applied at concentrations that are very safe for both humans and pets. The products are readily metabolized by the body, meaning that if contact occurs, they pass through without building up or causing long-term effects.

Your safety and peace of mind are our priority—every product we use meets stringent safety standards and is selected with care.
