Rat and mouse problems are among the most common pest issues we deal with year-round. Below are answers to some of the most frequent questions our customers ask:
If you’re hearing scratching or scurrying during the middle of the night, it’s likely rats.
If the noise occurs at dusk or just before sunrise, it’s more likely to be birds.
Fun fact: You’ll never find rats and birds sharing a ceiling space—if one’s there, the other won’t be.
It’s not about food or water. Your roof space is warm, dry, and predator-free, making it a perfect nesting location for rats.
Not exactly. Rats will chew on pipes, wires, insulation, even wood, but it’s not because they’re thirsty. Rodents’ teeth never stop growing, so chewing is a natural behavior to keep their teeth at a manageable length.
There’s a small chance—about 1 in 20 (5%)—that a rodent might die in an inaccessible area. If this happens, you’ll likely notice a strong odour for a few days.
We can provide odour-absorbing bags to neutralize the smell while the rodent naturally dries out.
No. While you might experience brief relief, rats and mice quickly adapt to repetitive sounds.
What starts as an annoyance quickly becomes background noise, offering little to no long-term control.
If these devices were effective, we’d be using them. But they aren’t—so we don’t.
The risk of secondary poisoning is extremely low.
By the time a rodent becomes lethargic or dies, the bait’s potency is significantly reduced and does not pose a danger to pets that may ingest the rodent afterward.

The most effective method for eliminating rodents is a professionally designed baiting and trapping strategy. We choose the perfect trap or bait for your situation – we even offer a range of pet safe or shrouded/box traps to ensure safety and target elimination. Depending on the severity of infestation we may suggest monthly or bi-monthly services of your rodent stations and traps to ensure rodent populations are kept to an absolute minimum
One of our trained technicians will carry out a thorough inspection of your property to:
Identify potential entry points
Locate signs of rodent activity
Pinpoint food sources that may be attracting rats and mice
We then place secure baits in the areas where activity has been detected. Baits are fastened with wire or placed in lockable bait stations if pets or children have access to the area. This not only ensures safety but also allows us to monitor bait take and activity levels for any follow-up visits.
There is approximately a 1 in 20 chance (5%) that a rodent may die in an inaccessible area such as a wall cavity or ceiling space. If this happens, it is usually noticeable due to an unpleasant odour for a few days.
To help with this, we offer odour-absorbing bags that neutralise the smell while the rodent naturally dries out.
Our technicians will also provide practical advice on:
Removing food sources that attract rodents
Identifying and sealing entry points into your home
(In many cases, it’s as simple as trimming overhanging trees or sealing small gaps around pipes.)
If you’re struggling with rats or mice, call the Pestrex team today for friendly advice or to book a professional rodent control treatment. We’re here to help.
No preparation or aftercare is required for rodent treatments.
At Pestrex, the security of our bait placements is a top priority. If there is any risk that children or pets might access the bait, we always secure it in a high-quality, lockable bait station. For bait placed in areas that are inaccessible to the public, we wire it in place to ensure that rodents cannot drag it to other locations.
All the bait we use contains Bitrex™, a compound that makes the bait extremely bitter, discouraging consumption. In the unlikely event that bait is accidentally ingested, an injection of Vitamin K1 is available to counteract any poisoning effects. Moreover, the bait is not fast acting—this means there will be days rather than hours available to address any accidental ingestion.
This approach ensures both effective rodent control and the safety of everyone in your home.
